Cable management and bungees
A mouse cable applies a force to your mouse, that force varies with the cable's position, and variable forces are the enemy of a repeatable movement. This is the entire argument for a bungee, and it is a better one than the usual claim that cables "drag".
The physics, briefly
A cable lying on a desk resists being dragged, with a force that depends on how much of it is in contact with the surface, how it is coiled, whether it has caught on an edge, and how warm and therefore how flexible it is.
All of those change during a session. That means the same hand movement produces slightly different mouse movements depending on the state of a piece of rubber behind your monitor.
The problem is not that the force is large. It is that it is inconsistent. Your motor system adapts to constant forces very well: you do not notice the weight of your own hand. It adapts poorly to forces that change unpredictably, because there is nothing stable to calibrate against.
What a bungee does
A bungee lifts the cable clear of the desk and holds it under light spring tension. Two consequences:
- The cable no longer touches the desk, so surface friction is removed from the system entirely.
- The remaining force, the spring tension, is roughly constant across the mouse's range because the spring absorbs the length change.
That converts a variable force into a small constant one, which your hand can adapt to. That is the whole mechanism.
If you do not have one
- Route the cable straight back from the mouse, not across the desk to one side.
- Bring it up over the rear edge of the desk rather than letting it run along the surface.
- Give it enough slack to reach every corner of your pad without going taut, and no more.
- Clip the excess behind the monitor so no loop rests on the desk.
- Test: move the mouse to each corner of the pad and check the cable never goes tight and never catches.
The improvised version works
Anything that lifts the cable a few centimetres above the desk behind the mouse and holds it lightly does the job. A heavy object with a paperclip taped to it is a functioning bungee. Try it before buying one, because if it makes no difference to you, you have saved the money and learned something.
The alternative
A wireless mouse removes the force rather than stabilising it, which is strictly better. The 2.4 GHz latency penalty is 0.2 to 1 ms, smaller than half a polling interval, and far smaller than the inconsistency a badly managed cable introduces. See wireless versus wired.

Does a mouse bungee actually improve aim?
Indirectly and genuinely, if you use a wired mouse. It does not make the mouse faster; it makes the force acting on the mouse constant instead of variable. A constant force your hand has adapted to is harmless. A force that changes depending on where the cable happens to be lying is not.
Do I need a bungee with a paracord cable?
Less, but still yes. Paracord cables are lighter and more flexible, which reduces the magnitude of the force considerably. It does not eliminate the variation: the cable still catches on the desk edge and still changes tension as it moves.
Can I make my own bungee?
Easily. Anything that lifts the cable a few centimetres above the desk behind the mouse and holds it with light tension works: a weighted clip, a bent paperclip on a heavy base, a section of cable ties. The commercial versions are convenient rather than magic.
Is a wireless mouse better than a wired one with a bungee?
For this specific problem, yes, because it removes the force entirely rather than making it more constant. The wireless latency penalty on a modern 2.4 GHz link is smaller than the aim inconsistency a poorly managed cable causes.
How should I route the cable if I have no bungee?
Bring it up and over the back of the desk with enough slack that the mouse can reach every corner of the pad without the cable going taut, but not so much that a loop lies on the desk and catches. Clip the excess behind the monitor. The failure you are avoiding is the cable going tight at the extreme of a sweep.
