Gaming audio
Audio is the cheapest information advantage available in a competitive shooter and the one most consistently neglected. A five hundred pound monitor tells you about the 45 degrees in front of you. A hundred pound headphone setup tells you about all 360.
What actually matters
- Correct stereo imaging. Wide, accurate left-right placement beats every processing feature. Most virtual surround makes this worse.
- A flat, uncoloured response, or a deliberate one you understand. Bass-heavy consumer tuning masks the frequencies footsteps live in.
- Sound settings in game. Free, and usually more impactful than the hardware.
- Wired, or a low-latency wireless dongle. Bluetooth audio latency is measured in tens of milliseconds and desynchronises sound from vision.
Why audio is the most neglected part of a competitive setup
Think of a competitive shooter as an information problem. Your monitor delivers information about roughly 45 degrees of the world in front of you, at very high resolution and with very low latency. Your headphones deliver lower-resolution information about the entire sphere around you, including through walls and floors, and they do it for a fraction of the price.
Almost nobody allocates their budget that way. A common setup pairs an expensive display with a bundled headset whose tuning actively hides the frequencies that carry movement cues. That is a large, cheap, unclaimed improvement sitting in most people's setups, which is why audio sits at position seven on our upgrade order despite costing so little.
The audio chain, in the order it goes wrong

Five of those six are free. Audio is the area where configuration beats hardware by the largest margin on this site.
What you are actually listening for
Three separable judgements, each using different cues:
- Direction. Left and right are resolved almost perfectly by headphones, using arrival time and level difference between your ears. Front, back and elevation depend on spectral filtering by your outer ear, which headphones reproduce poorly without engine-level processing. See positional audio.
- Distance. Level, high-frequency loss over distance, and the ratio of direct to reflected sound. Two of those three depend on hearing high frequencies accurately, which is the argument against a bass-boosted tuning.
- Material and occlusion. Whether a step is on wood or metal, and whether it is behind a wall, is carried between roughly 500 Hz and 6 kHz. See EQ for competitive play.
