A display does two separable things for a competitive player: it shows you information sooner, and it shows you moving objects more clearly. Those are different benefits with different specifications behind them, and conflating them is why so much monitor advice is confusing.

The two benefits, kept apart

  • Latency: a higher refresh rate reduces the mean wait before a finished frame starts being drawn. From 144 Hz to 240 Hz that saving is about 1.4 ms. Real, but small.
  • Motion clarity: more unique images per second means a moving target smears less. This is the large benefit, it is perceptual rather than temporal, and it depends on your framerate, not just your panel.
  • The consequence: a high refresh panel fed a low framerate delivers almost none of the second benefit. Frames first, then Hz.

Frames first, then hertz

A display cannot invent information. If your panel refreshes 480 times a second and your game delivers 200 frames, then 280 of those refreshes repeat an image you have already seen. Motion clarity, which is the larger of the two benefits a fast display gives you, tracks the rate of unique images rather than the rate of refreshes.

The practical rule that falls out of this: judge a display purchase against your 1% low framerate in a busy fight, not against your menu-screen average. If your 1% low is 180 fps, a 240 Hz panel is well matched and a 360 Hz one is largely decoration. Check with the FPS and refresh calculator.

What actually improves what you see, in order

  1. Framerate. Reduces persistence blur and two separate latency terms at once, works on any panel, no side effects. Detail.
  2. Refresh rate, once framerate can feed it. Real and substantial up to about 240 Hz, sharply diminishing after. Detail.
  3. Pixel response fast enough for the refresh rate. A 360 Hz panel whose pixels take 8 ms to transition is not delivering 360 distinct frames. Detail.
  4. Correct overdrive tuning. Free, takes five minutes, and most panels ship it wrong for the refresh rate you actually use.
  5. Panel technology. OLED removes transition blur entirely. Everything else is a compromise between response, contrast and price. Detail.
  6. Size and distance. Not about image quality at all: it decides whether your whole screen sits inside the arc your eyes can scan without turning your head. Detail.

The most common mistake

Buying refresh rate before frames. A 360 Hz panel attached to a machine that renders 130 fps in a firefight delivers the motion clarity of a 130 Hz panel and the latency of a 360 Hz one, which is the smaller half of the benefit for the larger half of the price.
