Monitor size and viewing distance
Tournament monitors have been 24 to 25 inches for over a decade while everything else about them has changed completely. The reason is not tradition, and it is not that smaller screens are easier to see. It is the arc your eyes can cover without moving your head.
The scanning cone
You can move your eyes through roughly 45 degrees of horizontal arc comfortably, without moving your head. Beyond that, checking something at the edge of your vision requires a head turn, which is measurably slower and breaks your posture relative to the mouse.
In a competitive shooter you are constantly checking peripheral information: a minimap, a killfeed, a teammate's health, movement at the edge of the frame. If those elements sit outside the arc you can scan with your eyes, every check is a head movement.
This is the real argument for a small monitor, and it is a much better one than the usual claim that smaller screens mean less eye travel to find enemies.

Two readings. First, a 24.5 inch panel at 65 cm is almost exactly at the boundary, which is why that combination became the standard. Second, a larger panel is entirely workable if you move it further away, and moving it further away costs nothing except desk depth.

Row three is the one people miss: a larger screen viewed from proportionally further away is optically identical to a smaller one viewed closer. The only differences are desk depth and price. If you have the depth, a larger panel at a greater distance is a completely valid competitive setup.
Setting your own distance
Measure from your eyes to the panel surface with your chair in its normal position. Most people are 5 to 10 cm further back than they guess, because the monitor stand sits behind the desk edge. Then use the calculator to check the arc. If you are above 45 degrees, push the monitor back before you consider buying anything.

What size monitor do professional players use?
24 to 25 inches, essentially universally in tactical shooters. At a typical 60 to 70 cm viewing distance that puts the whole screen inside the roughly 45 degree arc the eyes can scan without head movement, so every part of the display stays checkable at a glance.
Is a 27 inch monitor bad for competitive gaming?
Not bad, but it requires either sitting further back or accepting that the screen edges fall outside your comfortable scanning arc. Many people happily play competitively on 27 inch panels. If you do, push the monitor back until the screen subtends about 45 degrees, which is roughly 72 cm for a 27 inch 16:9 panel.
Does a bigger monitor make enemies easier to see?
Only if you sit at the same distance, and then the effect is the same as sitting closer to a smaller one: everything is angularly larger, including the distance your eyes must travel. It also lowers pixels per degree at the same resolution, so the image is less sharp per degree, which partly cancels the benefit.
How far should I sit from my monitor?
Far enough that the screen width covers no more than about 45 degrees of your visual field. The size and distance calculator gives the figure for your exact panel. For a 24.5 inch 16:9 panel that is roughly 65 cm or more.
Are ultrawide monitors bad for shooters?
Generally unsuitable, for two reasons. Many competitive titles either letterbox to 16:9 or render extra width that places information well outside your scanning arc. And the same horizontal resolution spread over more degrees lowers pixels per degree. They are excellent for other genres.
