Headsets versus headphones plus a microphone
A gaming headset is two products in one enclosure, and the compromise usually shows in both. Splitting them costs more in cables and desk space and buys you noticeably better sound and a noticeably better microphone at the same total price.
The case for splitting
A headset must fit a microphone, a headphone driver, often a wireless radio and a battery, and sometimes a whole DSP, into one product at one price. Every one of those competes for the same budget.

The middle row is the one most people should look at and the one least discussed. A clip-on boom microphone attaching to a headphone cable costs very little, takes no desk space, and removes the microphone from the list of things your headphone budget has to cover.

Open-back is the usual recommendation for positional accuracy, and the reason is partly the more natural presentation and partly that less internal resonance means fewer artificial reflections confusing the distance cues. It is not a large effect and it is completely undone by a noisy room, so if you cannot control your environment, take the closed-back.
The microphone side, briefly
Your microphone does nothing for your own play and quite a lot for your team's, which is why it deserves a paragraph rather than a page.
- Dynamic microphones reject room noise well because they are less sensitive and pick up less at a distance. Good in a noisy room or with a loud keyboard.
- Condenser microphones are more sensitive and more detailed, and will pick up your keyboard, your fan and your neighbour. Good in a treated or quiet room.
- Position matters more than price. A cheap microphone 10 cm from your mouth beats an expensive one 60 cm away, because the ratio of your voice to everything else improves with proximity.
- Use a noise gate, set just above your room's noise floor, rather than aggressive noise suppression that mangles your voice.

- Quiet room, want the best positioning: open-back headphones plus a modular boom microphone.
- Shared room or LAN: closed-back headphones plus a boom microphone, or a good closed headset.
- Want one device and no fuss: a wired headset from a brand that publishes measurements. This is a perfectly reasonable choice.
- Also stream or record: headphones plus a desk microphone on an arm. The microphone is now doing a second job that justifies its cost.
- Never: Bluetooth audio for competitive play.

At a given price, generally yes for sound quality, because part of the budget went to the microphone, the wireless system and the software. A hundred pound headphone typically outperforms the headphone half of a hundred pound headset. Whether that matters depends on how much you value the convenience of one device.
