Mouse skates and glide

Skates cost a few pounds and change how a mouse feels more than a fifty pound pad upgrade does. They are also a wear item that most people never replace, which means a lot of players are aiming on a surface that has been slowly changing under them for two years.

Skates and pad are one system

Friction is a property of two surfaces in contact, not of either alone. A speed pad with rough stock skates can feel slower than a control pad with good virgin PTFE. This is why comparing pads without controlling for skates produces such contradictory advice, and why the cheapest way to change how your mouse feels is to change the smaller and cheaper half of the pair.

Recognising worn skates

PTFE wears smoothly and quietly, so the change happens too slowly to notice from feel. Check visually instead.

  • Chamfer gone. New skates have a rounded edge so they do not catch. When that rounding wears to a sharp corner, the skate catches on cloth and small movements get a stutter.
  • Thickness reduced. A worn skate sits the mouse lower, which reduces effective lift-off distance and can cause tracking dropouts on a thick pad.
  • Uneven wear. If one skate is more worn than the others, the mouse rocks slightly, which shows up as inconsistency in slow tracking.
  • Grooves or embedded grit. A single piece of grit embedded in a skate will score your pad and ruin the glide of both.

The five minute maintenance routine

Once a month: turn the mouse over, wipe the skates with a dry cloth, check for embedded grit with a fingernail, and look at the edges. Wipe the pad surface under where the mouse sits. This takes almost no time and prevents the most common cause of gradually degrading glide, which is a single hard particle doing damage for six months.

Changing skates properly

  1. Peel old skates off slowly, from a corner. If adhesive residue remains, remove it with isopropyl alcohol on a cloth, not with a fingernail.
  2. Let the surface dry completely. Adhesive does not bond to alcohol residue.
  3. Align the new skates before pressing down. Most sets allow one attempt at repositioning.
  4. Press firmly for several seconds each.
  5. Expect a break-in period of a few hours. Do not judge them in the first ten minutes.

If your mouse has dot skates and you want more stability, or full-perimeter skates and you want a floatier feel, aftermarket sets exist in both configurations for most popular shells. This is a legitimate way to tune feel without buying a new mouse.

What are mouse skates made of?

Almost all are PTFE, better known as Teflon, chosen for having one of the lowest coefficients of friction of any solid against cloth and plastic. Virgin PTFE is the higher grade and glides more smoothly than the moulded or recycled variety used on cheaper stock feet. Glass and ceramic skates also exist for very low friction on hard pads.

How often should I replace mouse skates?

Every 6 to 18 months with regular play, or as soon as you can see the edges have worn through the rounded chamfer to a sharp edge. A worn skate is thinner, which lowers the mouse and changes lift-off distance, and its sharp edge catches on cloth.

Do bigger skates glide better?

Not straightforwardly. Friction is largely independent of contact area, so total surface area matters less than the distribution. What larger skates do is spread the load, reducing pressure and therefore how much the mouse sinks into a soft cloth pad, which is what actually feels smoother. On a hard pad the difference is small.

Should I use dot skates or full-perimeter skates?

Dot skates (small round feet) reduce contact and are popular for a fast, floaty feel. Full-perimeter skates give more stability and a more planted feel. Neither is better; it is the same speed-versus-control trade as pads, moved to a different component.

Do skates need breaking in?

Yes. New PTFE has moulding release residue and slightly sharp edges, and both wear off over the first few hours of use. A new set of skates that feels scratchy at first will usually smooth out. Give it a week before deciding.
