Mouse grip styles
Most guides ask you to choose a grip. That is backwards: you already have one, it emerged from your hand size and your desk, and the useful question is what it implies for the mouse you should buy.
The three grips, by contact point
The clearest way to define a grip is by which parts of your hand touch the shell, because that determines everything downstream: how the mouse is stabilised, which muscles move it, and how large it needs to be.

The last column is what makes this practical. Multiply your hand length by those percentages and you get the shell length that fits your grip. The size finder does this and then filters the database for you.
What each grip is actually good at
Palm
The hand rests. Weight is carried by the shell, not by muscle, which is why palm grip is the least fatiguing over a four-hour session. The trade is inertia: more of your hand is coupled to the mouse, so starting and stopping a movement involves more mass, and rapid direction changes are slower.
Palm is well suited to slow, deliberate aim and to games where you hold an angle. It is poorly suited to constant reorientation.
Claw
The dominant grip among competitive players, for two reasons. Mechanically, the arched fingers act like a spring: the click movement is short and the finger is already loaded, so clicks are fast and repeatable. Practically, claw works across the widest range of mouse sizes, because the palm contact is a single point rather than a whole surface, so a mouse that is 5 mm too long or short still works.
The trade is that grip pressure is doing continuous work. Over a long session that shows up as forearm fatigue, and it is why claw grippers are the population that most benefits from a light mouse.
Fingertip
Maximum control resolution and minimum stability. Because only the finger pads touch, the smallest deliberate movements a human can make are available to you, which is genuinely useful for micro-corrections. Because nothing supports the mouse, larger movements are harder to keep straight and the mouse can rotate under a fast flick.
Fingertip favours smaller and lighter shells, faster sensitivities, and players who make many small adjustments rather than a few large ones.
Hybrid grips are normal
Most people do not use one of these three. They use a claw grip that rests slightly more than a textbook claw, or a palm grip with arched index and middle fingers. This is not a problem to be corrected. The three categories are landmarks for reasoning about size, not a classification everyone must fit into.
Two hybrids are common enough to name:
- Relaxed claw: palm contact at the rear third rather than only the edge, fingers moderately arched. Behaves like claw for sizing, like palm for fatigue.
- Claw-tip: no palm contact, but fingers arched rather than vertical. Sizes like fingertip, stabilises slightly better.
When your grip is a symptom
Occasionally a grip is not a preference but a workaround, and in that case changing the mouse is the correct fix.

Grip tape is underrated
If you are gripping hard to stop the mouse slipping, adding texture to the sides lets you grip softer for the same control. It costs a few pounds, it is the single cheapest change in this entire cluster, and it addresses a genuine cause of forearm fatigue. Apply it to the side walls where your thumb and ring finger sit, not to the main buttons.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know which grip I use?
Play for ten minutes, then freeze without adjusting and look at your hand. If your palm is touching the back of the mouse and your fingers lie flat along the buttons, that is palm. If your palm touches only the rear edge and your fingers are arched with the knuckles raised, that is claw. If your palm touches nothing and only your fingertips are on the shell, that is fingertip. If it is somewhere between two of those, you have the same hybrid grip most people have, and that is fine.
Which grip is best for aiming?
None of them, in general. Claw is the most common among competitive players, which is partly mechanics and partly that claw works with the widest range of mouse sizes. Palm gives the most stability for slow, precise movement. Fingertip gives the fastest micro-adjustments and the least stability. Your existing grip is nearly always the right one to build around.
Can I change my grip?
Yes, and it takes a few weeks, and it is usually not worth it. The exception is when your grip is a workaround for a mouse that does not fit: if you are fingertip gripping a mouse that is too large because you cannot reach the buttons otherwise, that is not a grip, it is a symptom. Fix the mouse.
Does grip style change what sensitivity I should use?
Indirectly, through which muscles do the work. Fingertip grip favours faster sensitivities because the finger movement range is small. Palm grip works comfortably at slower sensitivities because it stabilises the mouse over long sweeps. But sensitivity is chosen from your desk space and your genre first; grip is a secondary input.
Do claw grip users need lighter mice?
They benefit more than palm grippers do. In a claw grip the mouse is held by finger pressure rather than supported by the palm, so its weight is carried by smaller muscles working harder. This is where the ultralight trend genuinely earns its keep. A palm gripper resting on a shell notices weight far less.
