Why size is the specification that matters
Spend an hour reading mouse reviews and you will see sensor model, polling rate, weight in grams, click latency in milliseconds and battery life quoted for every product. You will rarely see a sentence telling you whose hand it is for. That is backwards. A modern sensor is functionally perfect: the difference between a PixArt 3395 and a Focus Pro 35K will not cost you a duel. A shell that is 8 mm too long for your grip will cost you duels every session for as long as you own it, because you will be compensating with grip pressure that changes as your hand warms up and tires.
Fit is also the specification you cannot fix later. You can change DPI, you can change polling rate, you can change your sensitivity. You cannot change the length of your hand.
What each dimension does
Length
Length sets whether the shell supports your hand or whether your hand hangs off it. Too short and your palm rests on the mousepad behind the mouse, which turns your hand into a second, uncontrolled contact point; every movement now drags skin across cloth. Too long and your fingers reach past the buttons, so you click on the far end of the lever where the travel is longest and the actuation feels mushy.
Width at the widest point
Width sets where your thumb and ring finger sit. This matters more than most people expect, because those two fingers do the lateral control: they are what stops the mouse rotating when you flick. A shell too wide for your hand forces your thumb flat against the side, which removes the ability to pinch, and lateral control collapses. A shell too narrow and your fingers curl underneath, dragging on the pad.
Height and hump position
Height alone tells you almost nothing; where the peak sits tells you everything. A 44 mm mouse with a rear hump (the DeathAdder pattern) fills the palm and suits palm grip. A 40 mm mouse with a centre hump (the Superlight pattern) supports the middle of the hand and is neutral. A 38 mm mouse with a flat back (the Viper pattern) leaves your palm off the shell entirely, which is what claw and fingertip grips want. Two mice with identical height numbers can feel like different categories of object.

The limit of any sizing tool
This calculator gives you a window, not a verdict. Hand shape varies in ways two measurements cannot capture: finger length relative to palm, thumb joint mobility, and how much you actually press down. Treat the output as a shortlist to try, and buy from somewhere with a returns policy. Anyone who tells you a formula can pick your mouse is selling something.

Frequently asked questions
How do I measure my hand correctly?
Length: place your hand flat, palm up, fingers together and straight. Measure from the crease at the base of your palm (where your wrist bends) to the tip of your middle finger. Width: measure across the palm at the widest point, at the knuckles, excluding the thumb. Use centimetres to one decimal place. Measuring in a fist or with fingers splayed will throw the result out by a centimetre, which is the difference between two mouse sizes.
Where do the ratios come from?
They come from where the hand contacts the shell in each grip. In a palm grip the shell has to support from the base of your palm to your fingertips, so it needs to be roughly 66 to 73 percent of hand length. In a claw grip the palm only touches the rear of the shell and the fingers arch, which shortens the required length to roughly 61 to 69 percent. Fingertip grip contacts the shell only at the finger pads, needing roughly 56 to 65 percent. These are our bands, derived from contact geometry and then calibrated against the shells people with each hand size actually end up using. They are guidance, not a law of nature.
My hand is between sizes. What now?
This is extremely common between 17.5 and 18.5 cm, which is roughly the middle of the adult range and exactly where manufacturers stop making distinct sizes. Two workable strategies: move your grip rather than your mouse (a slightly small shell claw-gripped is more comfortable than a slightly large shell palm-gripped), or prioritise the width and hump match over the length match, because those determine whether your thumb and ring finger have a stable place to sit.
Does mouse weight change what size fits?
Not the fit, but it changes how much a bad fit hurts. A heavy mouse held in a grip that does not fully contact the shell has to be gripped harder to control, which is where hand fatigue and inconsistent micro-adjustment come from. If you are stuck with a shell that is slightly too large, going lighter genuinely helps.
Why are only some mice shown?
The reference set is curated: shapes that define the market or that fill a size gap nothing else covers. It is not a catalogue of everything on sale. If nothing matches your window, the archetype guide is more useful than the list, because it tells you which family of shapes to look for rather than which specific product.
