Why the pad is the third item on our upgrade list

Sensitivity choice is the first thing we tell people to settle, and desk space is the second, because the second constrains the first. If you decide on a 45 cm per 360 aim and then try to execute it on a 350 mm pad, you will be lifting and repositioning inside every extended engagement. Each lift is a moment where your hand returns to a slightly different place, and that error is invisible until you try to make a small correction immediately afterwards.

The fix is almost always cheaper than the alternative. A larger pad costs less than a mouse and far less than relearning your sensitivity.

The three widths, and what each assumes

The additive term is the mouse itself. A shell is 120 to 130 mm long and sits inside the pad boundary, so a pad exactly as wide as your turn distance is a pad you will run off.

Check your current pad before buying

Put your mouse at the left edge of your pad, do one full turn in game, and see where the mouse ends up. If it is past the right edge, or if you had to lift, your pad is under the comfortable band. That thirty-second test is more reliable than any formula, including ours.

Depth, which the width formula ignores

The arithmetic above is about horizontal reach. Depth is about the shape of your movement. If you aim from the elbow, your mouse traces an arc, not a line, and the deeper the pad the more of that arc stays on the surface. If you aim from the wrist, your movement is closer to a straight slide and depth barely matters.

Practical guidance: at 45 cm per 360 or slower, get at least 400 mm of depth. Faster than that, 300 mm is genuinely sufficient and the extra desk space is better spent elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the minimum less than my cm/360?

Because a full 360 degree turn is the worst case and it is rare. Most aiming happens within 90 degrees of where you are already facing, and full turns can be split across a lift and reposition without much cost. The minimum figure assumes you accept lifting on full turns; the comfortable figure assumes you never want to.

Does pad depth matter as much as width?

Only if you aim with your forearm. At 45 cm per 360 and slower, your forearm sweeps an arc rather than sliding straight, so the mouse describes a curve and needs vertical room. 400 mm of depth keeps the whole arc on cloth. At faster sensitivities the movement is mostly wrist, and 300 mm is plenty.

Is a bigger pad always better?

No. A desk mat that runs under your keyboard changes your keyboard's height and feel, and a very large pad on a small desk forces the keyboard into a position that rotates your shoulder inward. Buy the size your aim needs plus a margin, not the largest one that fits.

Control, speed or hybrid surface?

A separate question from size and mostly a matter of what your hand does under fatigue. Control surfaces have higher static friction, so they resist the start of a movement, which suits people who overshoot. Speed surfaces glide, which suits people who undershoot or who play at low sensitivity where a long sweep on a grippy pad becomes tiring. Neither is more accurate in the abstract.

Glass pads: gimmick or genuine?

Genuine but specific. Glass is extremely fast and extremely consistent, since it does not compress, absorb humidity or wear in. It also requires harder skates, transmits more vibration to your hand, and punishes anyone who relies on friction to stop a movement. If you already play fast and have found cloth inconsistent between seasons, it solves a real problem. Otherwise it solves nothing.
