Desk height and posture

The most common ergonomic problem in a gaming setup is a desk that is too high, because standard desks are built to a height that suits writing rather than mousing. A desk 5 cm too tall keeps your shoulder slightly elevated for every hour you play, and that shows up as both discomfort and inconsistency.

The target geometry

There is a single arrangement almost every ergonomic source converges on, and it is worth stating precisely:

  • Feet flat on the floor or a footrest, thighs roughly horizontal.
  • Elbow at roughly 90 degrees, upper arm hanging vertically at your side.
  • Shoulder relaxed and down, not lifted.
  • Forearm level with the desk surface, and supported by it.
  • Wrist straight, neither bent up towards the mouse nor down away from it.
  • Monitor top edge at or slightly below eye level.

Everything else follows from the second and third points. If the desk is too high, you cannot have a 90 degree elbow and a relaxed shoulder at the same time: you must lift the shoulder. That lift is small, permanent while you play, and it is doing static muscular work for hours.

Set it in the right order

People almost always adjust in the wrong sequence, which is why they end up with a compromise that suits neither their body nor their desk.

  1. Chair first, to your body. Set the seat so your thighs are horizontal and your feet are flat.
  2. Desk second, to your arm. Adjust the desk until your forearm is level and your elbow is at 90 degrees with the shoulder relaxed.
  3. If the desk cannot go low enough: raise the chair until the arm geometry is right, then add a footrest to restore the leg geometry.
  4. Monitor last, to your eyes: top edge at or just below eye level, at a distance where the screen subtends no more than about 45 degrees.

The standard desk problem

Most desks are 73 to 76 cm tall, a height standardised for writing with a pen. Comfortable mousing height for a seated adult is typically 65 to 72 cm. If your desk is not adjustable and you are of average height or shorter, you are almost certainly working several centimetres too high, and raising the chair with a footrest is the correct fix.

Forearm support is the underrated part

A supported forearm and an unsupported one produce measurably different movements, because an unsupported arm requires continuous shoulder work to hold position. Those muscles are large, they fatigue, and their output varies as they do, which turns into variability in your aim over the course of a session.

Support means the forearm rests on the desk, ideally from mid-forearm to elbow, through the whole range of the movement you make. That requires desk depth: if the mouse is 30 cm from the desk edge and your forearm sweeps, part of that sweep may take the arm off the desk entirely.

The fix, again, is usually keyboard position. Moving the keyboard left and rotating it frees the depth your forearm needs.

The last row is the one relevant to performance rather than comfort. If your aim is noticeably worse in hour three than in hour one, that is a fatigue signature, and fatigue is an ergonomics problem rather than a gear problem.

Is a wrist rest a good idea?

For typing, often. For mousing, usually not: a wrist rest anchors your wrist, which forces the fine movement into the fingers alone and reduces the range available. If you use one, use it between actions rather than during them.

My desk is not adjustable. What can I do?

Raise the chair until your forearm is level with the desk, then solve the resulting problem: if your feet no longer reach the floor, use a footrest. This is the standard fix and it works. Raising the chair and adding a footrest achieves the same geometry as lowering the desk.

Does posture actually affect aim?

Yes, through repeatability. A movement produced by a relaxed, supported forearm is more consistent than the same movement produced by a shoulder holding position against gravity, because the muscles doing the fine control are not also doing structural work. Consistency is what aim is made of.
