Wireless versus wired
For a decade, wired was the only defensible choice for competitive play. That stopped being true around 2019, and the argument now runs the other way: a cable is a physical force acting on your aim, and modern 2.4 GHz links cost less latency than that force does.
The latency, in context
The right way to evaluate the wireless penalty is against the other terms in the chain, not against zero.

If the radio hop is your largest remaining term, you have already fixed everything else, and you are in a very small population.
The cable is not free either
The argument for wireless is not merely that its latency cost is small. It is that a cable has its own cost, which is usually ignored because it is not measured in milliseconds.
A cable applies a force to your mouse. That force varies with the cable's position, its temperature, whether it has caught on the desk edge, and how much of it is lying flat. So the same hand movement produces slightly different mouse movements depending on the state of a piece of rubber behind your monitor. That is a source of inconsistency, and consistency is the thing aim is made of.
Modern paracord cables reduce this substantially, and a bungee reduces it further, but neither eliminates it. A wireless mouse eliminates it entirely.
Where wired still wins
Price per gram
Removing the radio and battery removes cost and weight. A wired mouse at a given weight and sensor tier is typically much cheaper than its wireless equivalent, and this is the strongest remaining argument. The Endgame Gear OP1 8K at 50 g is a useful example: wired, 8 kHz, and priced well below wireless mice of similar weight.
Radio-hostile environments
A LAN event with several hundred 2.4 GHz dongles in one hall is a genuinely difficult radio environment. Dropped reports are worse than consistent small delays. Competitive events frequently standardise on wired equipment for exactly this reason.
Never thinking about charging
A completely valid preference. Modern wireless mice run for weeks, and a magnetic charging dock removes the problem entirely, but if the answer is "I do not want to have a battery in my mouse", that is a reason and it does not need defending.
Our position
- For most players, wireless is now the better choice, and the reason is cable drag rather than latency.
- The 2.4 GHz penalty is real and below perception. Bluetooth is not an option for play.
- Wired remains the value choice, and the LAN choice.
- If you use wired, buy a bungee. It costs very little and removes most of the cable's variability.

Frequently asked questions
Is wireless slower than wired?
Marginally, and by an amount below the threshold of perception. A modern proprietary 2.4 GHz link adds roughly 0.2 to 1 ms over a wired connection at the same polling rate. For context, half a polling interval at 1000 Hz is 0.5 ms, and one frame at 240 fps is 4.2 ms. The radio hop is not your bottleneck.
Can I use Bluetooth for gaming?
No. Bluetooth's connection intervals are measured in whole milliseconds and its latency is both higher and far less consistent than a proprietary dongle. It is a convenience mode for laptops and travel, and every mouse that offers both offers the dongle for a reason.
Does a mouse bungee actually help?
Yes, meaningfully, if you use a wired mouse. A cable dragging across a desk applies a variable sideways force that changes as the cable position changes, so the same hand movement produces slightly different results depending on where the cable happens to be. A bungee lifts the cable and makes that force small and constant.
Do wireless mice have worse click latency?
No. Click latency is dominated by switch debounce in the mouse's own firmware, which is the same on both connection types. The radio adds the same sub-millisecond hop to a click as to a movement.
When is wired still the right choice?
Three cases: when you want the lowest possible price for a given weight and sensor, because omitting the radio and battery saves both money and grams; when you play in a radio-hostile environment such as a LAN hall with hundreds of dongles; and when you refuse to think about charging, which is a legitimate preference.
