The competitive argument for a small keyboard is not aesthetic and it is not about portability. It is that every centimetre the keyboard does not occupy is a centimetre your mouse arm gets back, and desk width is the binding constraint on sensitivity for most people.

The space argument, quantified

Standard key spacing is 19.05 mm per unit. That makes the width arithmetic simple and the conclusion concrete.

Fifteen centimetres is a large amount of desk. On a 120 cm desk it is the difference between a 350 mm pad and a 450 mm pad, which is the difference between a 35 cm/360 sensitivity being comfortable and being marginal.

The angle argument, which matters more than width

There is a second effect that gets less attention and is arguably larger. A wide keyboard pushes your mouse further to the right, which rotates your shoulder inward and puts your forearm at an angle across your body. That position is both less comfortable and less precise, because the fine control muscles work better with the forearm in a neutral position.

Watch a competitive player's desk and you will notice the keyboard is not only small, it is angled, often quite steeply, with the top-left corner rotated away. That angle exists to let the left forearm sit naturally while keeping the right side of the desk clear. It looks odd and it is correct.

Try it before you buy it

Before spending anything, unplug your keyboard and move it 10 cm left and rotate it 15 degrees. Play a session. If your mouse arm immediately feels better, you have learned that your problem is position, and a smaller board will help. If nothing changes, your desk is not your constraint and you can buy a keyboard for the reasons everyone else does.

Our recommendation for most people is 65%: it returns nearly all the desk space of a 60% while keeping arrow keys, which is the loss people actually regret.

Frequently asked questions

What size keyboard do competitive players use?

TKL (tenkeyless) and 60% dominate, and the reason is desk space rather than feature preference. Removing the numpad returns roughly 8 to 10 cm of desk width; going from TKL to 60% returns roughly another 6 to 8 cm. That space goes to your mouse.

What is the difference between 60% and 65%?

A 65% adds a dedicated arrow cluster and usually one column of navigation keys on the right, costing about 2 cm of width. For most people the arrows are worth the 2 cm, which is why 65% has largely displaced 60% as the default small layout.

Do I lose functionality with a 60% keyboard?

No keys are lost, they move to a function layer accessed with a modifier. In game this is irrelevant because you rarely press F5 mid-round. Outside games it is a genuine adjustment: screenshots, media keys and arrow navigation all become two-key operations, and some people never stop finding that annoying.

Does a smaller keyboard actually improve aim?

Indirectly and meaningfully. It does not change how you aim, it changes how much room you have to do it in, which sets the slowest sensitivity you can physically execute. If you are running out of pad in fights, a smaller keyboard is a cheaper fix than a new desk.

What about analogue or 40% layouts?

40% removes the number row, which most games use for weapon selection, so it requires rebinding and is a niche choice. Analogue layouts are a Hall effect feature rather than a size: they map key depth to an axis, which is useful in games with variable movement speed and irrelevant in most shooters.
