Keycaps
Keycaps are mostly an enjoyment purchase, and there is nothing wrong with that. Two of their properties do affect play: profile, which changes how far your fingers travel and how easily they find home position, and surface texture, which changes grip when your hands are warm.
Profiles
Profile describes the height and shape of the caps, including whether each row is sculpted to a different angle. It is the property that changes how a keyboard feels to use more than the material does.

For competitive play the useful distinction is between sculpted and uniform. Sculpted profiles let your fingers find home position without looking, which matters when you have moved your hand to reach a bind and need to return. Uniform profiles are quicker to slide across but give you no tactile map. Neither is wrong.
Materials, and the shine problem
ABS keycaps develop a shiny patch where fingers rest. This is not dirt; the plastic surface texture is being polished away by skin contact. Once it has happened it cannot be reversed, and the polished area is noticeably more slippery than the rest of the cap.
That slipperiness is the reason this belongs on a performance page rather than an aesthetics one. A slick WASD cluster with warm hands is genuinely harder to keep your fingers located on, and it happens gradually enough that most people never connect the two.
PBT is harder and more chemically resistant, so it resists this for years rather than months. It is the correct default for any keyboard you use daily. The counterargument, that PBT sounds worse or moulds less precisely, is largely obsolete on current manufacturing.

The thing to check before buying a set
The bottom row. Standard keycap sets assume a 6.25 unit space bar with 1.25 unit modifiers. Many 65% and 75% boards, and most boards with a stepped or split space bar, do not use that layout, and a standard set will leave you with modifiers that do not fit. Count the units on your bottom row and match them against the set's kit list before ordering.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between ABS and PBT keycaps?
Two plastics. ABS is softer, takes sharper legends, and develops a shiny, slick patch where your fingers rest, usually within months. PBT is harder, more textured, resists shine for years, and is slightly harder to mould precisely. For a keyboard you use daily, PBT is the better material and the shine resistance is the main reason.
Does keycap profile affect gaming?
Mildly, in two ways. Taller profiles such as SA and MT3 mean more finger travel to reach the key surface and more sculpting to locate home position by feel. Flatter profiles such as XDA and DSA are quicker to move across but give less positional feedback. Cherry profile, the most common, is a moderate compromise and is what most people should use.
Are shine-through keycaps worth it?
Only if you want to see legends in the dark, which is a genuine consideration for some rooms. They are usually ABS with a translucent layer, so they shine up faster than PBT. If backlighting matters more than surface longevity, take them; otherwise do not.
What does double-shot mean?
The keycap is moulded in two passes with two plastics, so the legend is a physically separate piece of plastic running through the cap rather than a printed surface. Double-shot legends cannot wear off. Dye-sublimation is the other durable method, where dye is heat-diffused into the plastic; it works well on PBT but cannot produce light legends on dark caps.
Will any keycap set fit my keyboard?
Not necessarily. Check the bottom row: many small and non-standard layouts use unusual modifier widths, and a standard set will leave you with keys that do not fit. Also check stem type, since Cherry MX-style stems are the norm but low-profile and optical switches sometimes differ.
