Aim training
Aim trainers are genuinely useful and routinely oversold. They isolate a mechanical skill and let you practise it densely, which is a real advantage. They cannot practise the parts of aiming that depend on knowing where someone will be, which is most of what decides a real fight.
Three sub-skills, practised separately
"Aim" is not one thing, and the most useful contribution an aim trainer makes is separating it into components you can work on individually.

The last row is worth dwelling on. Simple reaction time is substantially constrained by neurology and improves very little with practice. Scenarios that mostly test it will show your score improving as you learn the scenario's specific rhythm, which is not the same as reacting faster in a game.
The principles that make practice work
These are general motor learning findings rather than anything specific to games, which is precisely why they are worth trusting.
- Specificity. You improve at what you practise, in the conditions you practise it. Practising at a different sensitivity, field of view or target size than you play at reduces transfer, sometimes to nothing. Convert your sensitivity first.
- Attentive repetition beats volume. Twenty focused minutes outperforms an hour of autopilot. Once you notice your attention drifting, the session is over.
- Variable practice transfers better than blocked practice. Mixing target sizes, distances and speeds within a session produces worse in-session scores and better retention than drilling one condition. This feels wrong and is well supported.
- Feedback needs to be about the movement, not the score. "I overshot and corrected back" is actionable. "I scored 82" is not.
- Consolidation happens between sessions. Sleep matters more than the last ten minutes of practice.

Match your sensitivity exactly
Convert your in-game cm/360 into the trainer before your first session, using the converter or by matching the distance by hand. Training at a different turn distance from the one you play at is not neutral, it is counterproductive: you are strengthening an association you will then have to override.
What it cannot do
Being clear about this is what separates useful advice from marketing.
- It cannot train crosshair placement. Most of what looks like superior aim in a strong player is the crosshair already being near the target when it appears, which is a knowledge and habit skill built by playing the map.
- It cannot train timing. Knowing when to peek and when to hold is decision-making with information, not a movement.
- It cannot train under real pressure. A scenario you can restart costs nothing to fail. The physiological state of a close round is different and it changes your movement.
- It cannot fix a setup problem. If you are running out of pad, gripping a mouse that does not fit, or playing on an unstable sensitivity, training on top of that trains the compensation.
That last point is the reason this page sits inside the sensitivity cluster rather than standing alone. Before spending hours in a trainer, spend twenty minutes on settling your sensitivity and check your setup constraints. Practice amplifies whatever system it is applied to, including a broken one.

Frequently asked questions
Do aim trainers actually work?
For the mechanical component of aim, yes: repeatedly practising a movement under time pressure improves that movement, which is uncontroversial motor learning. The open question is transfer, meaning how much of that improvement appears in a game where the target is a player who is trying not to be hit. Transfer is real but partial, and it is larger for players whose mechanics are genuinely their limiting factor.
How long should an aim training session be?
Fifteen to thirty minutes, focused, rather than an hour of drifting attention. Motor learning depends on attentive repetition rather than total time, and once concentration drops you are practising a sloppier version of the movement, which is worse than stopping.
Should I warm up with an aim trainer before playing?
A short warm-up is worthwhile, mostly for re-establishing your sensitivity feel rather than for training. Ten minutes at most, and use scenarios that resemble what you are about to play rather than whatever your highest score is on.
Is aim training useful if I am already good?
Less. The higher your mechanical ceiling, the more of your losses come from positioning, timing, information and decisions, none of which a trainer touches. If you can reliably hit what you aim at and you are still losing fights, the problem is which fights you are taking.
Does aim training in a different game hurt my muscle memory?
Not if you convert your sensitivity so cm/360 matches, which every serious aim trainer supports. Practising at a different turn distance from the one you play at is actively counterproductive, because you are training an association you will not use.
